We are looking forward to a great and exciting year with your child! Below is information you may find useful throughout the year.
Rules & Expectations
Students will...
1. BE SAFE. Walking, please. Keep hands, feet, and all other objects to yourself. Stay with your group. Stay in your assigned area. Stay on the right when in two-way traffic. Stop at all intersections.
2. BE PREPARED. Be on time. Have supplies, materials, and homework.
3. BE RESPECTFUL. Be respectful to yourself, to others, and your school and community.
4. DO THEIR BEST. Students will strive to work at their best. Courtesy-Students and teachers will be courteous to one another. Raise your hand to speak. Say please, thank you, excuse me, yes ma’am, etc. Do not interrupt others when speaking. Do not touch other people’s items. The teacher’s desk/area is off-limits to students unless you have permission. Complete silence is expected when an adult enters the room and during announcements. Big Bucks or Google Classroom Points-We will award students who follow the rules and show their best effort. Big Bucks or Google Classroom can be used for items students may need, buy prizes periodically, or for privileges throughout the school year. Not following expectations may cost them money as well. Spelling/Word Work-Please look for a copy of the word list in your child’s folder every Monday. Spelling is 10% of your child’s language arts grade. We will be learning spelling patterns and remembering the spelling of high-frequency words. We will not have a spelling test every week. Students will be working with words as they write.
Reading-Our goal in third grade is to improve reading comprehension and fluency as we develop lifelong readers. Please have your child read at least 20 minutes per night and record it on their reading log. Check for understanding by asking your child about their book. Reading is 60%, and English is 30% of the Reading grade. Accelerated Reader – We are utilizing the Accelerated Reader program this year. Each student will have personal goals to meet. Better readers come with practice and lead to lifelong learners. Math-We will spend time reviewing and building skills the students were introduced to in past years and add higher-level skills throughout the year. The math curriculum balances written work with games, manipulatives, technology, and assessments. Please work with your child on addition and subtraction facts to 18. Multiplication and division facts will follow. These facts need to be mastered with automaticity. Science/Social Studies-We will alternate teaching social studies and science units during the nine weeks. We look forward to having fun as we learn about our world and how things work. Power Hour-All students will receive daily enrichment for either math or reading skills. Enrichment groups will be grouped and based on student needs. This academic time will be significant for all students. P.E. - Send a note for the P.E. teacher when your child cannot participate. A student will not be allowed to play at recess when he/she does not participate in P.E. Remember to send your student to school with appropriate shoes for exercise and outdoor activities. Every Friday is Power Day as will as one-two additional days per week. Take-Home Folder/Homework-. Check folders daily. Our school policy encourages each student to have homework at least 4 nights per week. This could include reading, practice spelling words, vocabulary, math, and occasionally a social studies or science project. Homework assignments will not be lengthy. The purpose of homework is for additional practice. It is important that your child read at least 20 minutes per night from a book. There is a weekly Reading Log to go along with the 20 minutes of nightly reading.
Encourage your child to complete his/her homework each night. All Homework will be due daily. Those who choose not to complete their homework at home will lose recess time in order to complete it. Notes about good/bad choices may be written on the homework agenda for parent communication. If you have any thoughts or concerns, jot them down on that day and I will do the same. Graded Work- Graded work will come home every Tuesday in their folder. It is your child’s responsibility to bring these papers home for viewing. Please review their work with the student, making corrections as needed. STAAR Test- Third grade students must take the Reading and Math STAAR Assessment in the Spring. Student performance on these tests is very important. Please encourage your child to do their very best and ensure that he/she receives a good night’s sleep prior to testing. Breakfast is provided free of charge on testing days. Absences-Please send a note with your child the day they return to school giving the date of the absence, the reason for the absence, my name, and your child’s first and last name. Send a doctor’s note if your child had a medical appointment. The absence will not be excused unless a note is sent. You may call the office to ask to pick up your child’s work. All absence work needs to be completed ON TIME: they will have 1 day per each day absent to complete assignments. Tardies- Tardies are documented! School starts at 8:01. Excessive tardies can cause academic problems due to missing instruction. Personal Hygiene-Please encourage your child to practice good personal hygiene – shower or bathe daily, shampoo hair, brush teeth, etc. Lunch-Third grade will eat lunch from 11:50-12:20, with recess from 11:20-11:50 In the Cafeteria, they will be expected to:
